|Title||Hibbard & Darrin customer lists, correspondence, and photographs, 1958-1974|
|Collection||Thomas L. Hibbard Collection|
|Scope & Content||
File folder labeled "Customer lists - personalities - H&D corresp."
This file includes roughly 75 items: lists of Hibbard & Darrin customer names, including from the Minerva days; correspondence; typed and handwritten notes on typing paper, index cards, and scraps of paper; and photographs and photocopies of photographs.
Some correspondence is partial, i.e., missing pages, or has been used for jotting down notes. Not all notes are relevant to Hibbard's design work, e.g., calculations of road tolls in different New England states. In instances where there are automotive-related notes made on the back of unrelated materials, e.g., the Oyster River Bog Committee meeting minutes, those have been scanned as well to provide context and completeness.
Much of the correspondence is between Hibbard and owners or former owners of H&D-bodied automobiles, including people that acquired used Hibbard-bodied cars many years after they were built. Some letters deal with restoration projects or specific details of the vehicles used to determine their origin and/or authenticity.
Typical is a letter dated June 15, 1968, asking a Mrs. Dolly Watson for a photograph he had seen of her and her H&D-bodied car. Hibbard writes:
"I am the Hibbard of Hibbard & Darrin who built the Renault body you formerly owned...When I left Paris in 1932, I left all records and pictures and such material behind but in the past few years have attempted to collect pictures and have assembled quite a number."
Where a document is more than one page long or is related to another document in the file, this will usually be denoted in the image file names by a final letter, e.g., "a", "b", "c", etc.
