Map in red open cardboard box; paper on linen backing. Printed label shows that the map was made by Edward Stanton, Geographer to His Majesty and sole agent in London for the sale of ordnance maps. Hand-written in ink in middle of box label: "C.S. Rolls Balloon Map 'The Thames'".
Engraved at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton. Surveyed in 1860-65; first published 1876, revised in 1903-4 and published 1905. It appears likely that this map was the property of Charles S. Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, during the years when he was a balloonist; his named is stamped in several places on the map.
Color. Some staining due to water damage. Approximately 59"x29" unfolded; approximately 8"x5"x1 1/8" in box.
