This photo shows M. Farman piloting his Farman III biplane at the 1909 Reims air meet, "Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne" (the town name is sometimes spelled "Rheims" in English). Both Farman and his plane are facing the camera. He is only about twenty feet off of the ground.
Handwritten on the bottom left of the print: "Rheims 1909 (£2,000 prize) 112 mile flight." Farman won the Grand Prix de Champagne et la Ville de Reims (the Grand Prize for distance, non-stop, managing 180 km, or just under 112 miles) in 3 hours, 4 minutes and 56 seconds.
